Toledo Pet Photography. Metzger Huskies. Oak Openings.

I woke up one morning thinking about wolves and realized that wolf packs function as families. Everyone has a role, and if you act within the parameters of your role, the whole pack succeeds, and when that falls apart, so does the pack.

Marquita is the founder of Metzger Family Kennels. She has been cultivating a pack of AKC certified Huskies. Her pack now has five members, two males and three females. I had the pleasure of working with three of the dogs in January at Oak Openings Park. Marquita just amazes me with her knowledge about the breed. She has a gift for training and is clearly the alpha of the pack. Marquita makes every effort to make sure her pups are well taken care of and happy. I asked her to tell me a little bit about each of her dogs and I would like to introduce them to you!

Kylo

"Kylo is secretly an old man, even though he’s only 2 1/2. The only things that gets him excited are a select few people, squeaky toys, and a cup of whip cream. But he’s secretly a softy."

Naga

"Nags is 1 year old and is the BIGGEST cuddle bug. Her happy place is in bed snuggled right up next to us."

Korra

"10 months old and full of spunk. She is always happy and up for anything. She talks all the time and can’t figure out how to lick faces without using her teeth. She will steal anything you set down and bury it or play keep away."

The two pack members I did not work with were Misha and Hugo:

Misha

"Korra’s full sister, and is also ten months old. She’s the biggest sweetheart, always underfoot and giving kisses!"

Hugo

"6 months old and his personality is growing with him! As a small puppy he was absolutely impossible to train. He was full to bursting with energy, and couldn’t sit still to save his life. The older he gets the more his attentiveness really shows. He always wants to please and loves to be held like a baby."

Marquita says, "I think the most remarkable thing about my pack is the fact that everyone of them loves home. I never have to worry about them running away (and that is EXTREMELY uncommon for Huskies as a breed). They may get bored and find a way to escape, but the only reason I know they’ve gotten out is because they’re at the door smiling at their accomplishment."

Marquita is a strong advocate of breed education and believes that Huskies might not be the right fit for every family. "If you’re looking to own one, I would seek out people with huskies (or even a breeder you would consider getting a puppy from) and then ask every single question you can think of. Ask if you’ve missed anything, and then go spend a day with their Huskies. It’s really the only way to get a good picture of what it’s like to live with them." She also recommends checking out the AKC website for some articles on Siberian Huskies!

It was truly an honor to work with these stunning creatures and to learn more about pack mentality and the Husky breed.
