Healing, Training, Connection and Trust. Caitlin and Amir. Horse Photography in Toledo Ohio.

From Jessica:

Caitlin and Amir’s story is a horse lover’s dream come true. A sad set of circumstances brought Amir into Caitlin’s life when she wasn’t even looking for him. Through hard work on both their parts, Amir chose to trust humans again and found his person, and home, in Caitlin. These two have built a relationship that is based on patience and respect. When you see them interacting you can tell just how strong their relationship is.

At the beginning of my journey photographing horses, I imagined some sort of perfectly posed equine glamour shots. As It turns out, that’s not the kind of photos I really want to create. Good lighting, posing and editing will still be an important part of my process but I don’t want to allow them to get in the way of capturing genuine moments. I want to document a true and candid relationship, the real life version of horse and owner enjoying one another. Glamour shots are beautiful, but I want to create photos that will remind you exactly how it feels to brush their coat, to feed them their favorite snack, to see the recognition when they see you. I want to preserve the simple moments that you will miss when they are no longer with you.

Get to Know Amir from caitlin:

  • How did Amir become part of your life? He was abandoned by his previous owner at the barn I was leasing a different horse at. Once the barn owners got him healthy, they asked me to start training him so they could find him a new home. He and I developed a strong connection, so the rest is history!

  • What breed is he? How old was he when you got him? How old is he now? He is an Arabian. He was 8 years old when I got him, and is now 16.

  • What 3 words would you use to describe his personality and why? Intelligent, sassy, and charismatic. He is, hands down, the smartest horse I’ve ever been around. He is full of personality and loves to show off!

  • What is his favorite treat or activity? His favorite treat are peppermints, and his favorite activities are going on hacks, liberty work, and playing with his best buddy, Drifter.

  • Tell us about liberty training and how that has impacted your relationship with each other. Liberty training is interacting with your horse without any tack, which gives the horse freedom and choice in participation. Our relationship has definitely grown since we started liberty work. He loves learning new liberty tricks and views it as play. We both enjoy the variety liberty adds to our list of activities we are able to enjoy together.

  • What do you enjoy about having him as part of your life? I love and enjoy having him as part of my life more than words can say. He has been with me through many highs and lows, makes me laugh, and is always up for anything. He has taught me so much about horses and just life in general. It will sound cheesy to some people, but he has truly molded me into the horsewoman and person I am today.

  • What stood out to you about your experience with Jessica? Amir and I greatly enjoyed working with Jessica! She is so kind and patient. She is also thoughtful; she asked if there were any specific poses/actions I wanted to try to get photos of, and she was more than happy to capture them. I really appreciated her willingness to do so! Amir LOVED that she came armed with a bag of cookies and that she gave him many compliments on his good looks! He knows he’s handsome, but likes when it’s acknowledged.
